ROADS & ROUTES / FIELD GUIDE

Freight & gateways

The roads and connections that support Delaware commerce.

Freight moves through a network of highways, local roads, rail facilities, ports and distribution sites. A useful freight picture separates truck volumes from port tonnage, rail activity and employment. These measures have different geographies and reporting calendars; they should not be added together as if they describe one interchangeable system.

What to keep in view

  • Track the corridor or facility, not just the county
  • Distinguish freight movement from freight-related jobs
  • Use port, rail and highway operators for their own operating data
How to read this page

We distinguish a source’s reported observation from our interpretation. Where an update is preliminary, approximate or not comparable across geographies, we say so. This page is an explanatory guide, not an official government notice or professional advice.
